FAMILIES
Unfortunately, we don’t always bring the best version of ourselves to those we care most about. Demands on attention across the day, and the sheer constancy of the role of parenting are challenging. According to Seligman’s Wellbeing Theory "Strengths” underpin wellbeing. He defines strengths as "a natural capacity for behaving, thinking or feeling in a way that allows optimal functioning and performance in the pursuit of valued outcomes.” A Strengths focus demonstrates what is good and working well with ourselves, our children and the world. It builds self-belief and the courage and determination to bring our strengths to both the joys and challenges in life.
Parents are key stakeholders in the health and wellbeing of their children. Increasing awareness, knowledge and understanding through learning about wellbeing will have a direct, and positive influence on families. Having quality time, teaching empathy and care for others, embedding opportunities to pause and think about wellbeing, all enhance respectful and compassionate relationships. Understanding emotions and being able to coach your child, supporting them through challenges and scaffolding them to be competent and confident problem solvers, to fail and try again. Learning to strive is critical for self-belief, learning and wellbeing.
